So let’s jump in!
iPhone 8 Production
Believe it or not, we’re already well into product planning and positioning for the next iPhone. Generally around January and February, to our knowledge, Apple is already testing several different form factors of the iPhone and they’ll enter mass production sometime between May and July. Once they have entered mass production, that’s when our factory and most factories have enough confidence to allow us to go ahead and start building these products beyond the design phase.
So if we look at some of the most current rumors, let’s start with how many iPhones we think are going to be launched this year. We believe that there will probably be a similar form factor to what we have currently in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. So, those typical to Apple fashion will be called the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus. They’ll look very similar to the most current phones, they will have upgraded internal components as well as maybe upgraded cameras, and maybe upgraded ways to unlock the phone. Typically those types of things are what Apple likes to build into the “S” variations.
One thing that we’re fairly certain of is that the next iPhone will be launched sometime in September. That’s the tried and true schedule that Apple has stuck to. Now, this year is no different from years in the past, where there are currently rumors that it’s possible the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus will be released in September; and this new magical iPhone 8 Edition that we’ll get into a little bit more later, may not be coming out until after September.
We’ve heard this before.
iPhone 8 Rumors & Upgrades
Almost every year around this time that September date gets pushed back in some rumors. For the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition, we’re hearing a lot of rumors on what the phone might look like and what the upgraded features could be, so here we go!
All Glass Form Factor
One of the biggest rumors out is that the phone will go back to the all glass form factor, so the front of the phone and back of the phone would be glass with an aluminum band around the sides similar to the iPhone 4 and 4S.
Another rumor we’re hearing is that it’s possible that the fingerprint/touch ID sensor could could be going away or it could just be that the screen will be flush and it will still be built in, there just won’t be a divot there.
Additionally we’re hearing that the screen size itself could be 5.8 inches. Many of you might get a little panicky and think that the iPhone Edition could be bigger than the current iPhone 7 Plus. No, that’s not the case. So, if you look at your phone today, you will see there are two black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. What Apple would be doing according to the rumors is using that space that they are currently not using to make the screen size bigger. The actual footprint of the phone itself will probably be closes to the iPhone 6 or iPhone 7. They are just going to be using more of that black space there to get the 5.8 inches of screen real estate for you.
Another rumor that’s popped up recently is that Apple could be using facial recognition software to unlock the phone, or possibly a combination of the fingerprint sensor along with facial recognition. We’ll continue to monitor that and report back when we have any news.
Finally, iPhone Edition could cost over $1,000 and will also include a flexible plastic OLED screen. Now what’s interesting about the OLED screen is that it will allow for better contrast ratio, which means blacker blacks, it will also have a better viewing angle, but the most interesting thing is that is uses less power. So, it could mean even more battery life for you in the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition.
